Inside Out 2 – book your tickets for the new Pixar movie

Prepare for Pixar's latest emotional rollercoaster in the forthcoming Inside Out 2. Just as we start to recover from that Bing Bong scene in Inside Out (yes, it was released in 2015, but the trauma is still with us), the sequel promises to throw Emotions HQ into disarray. Expect a host of new characters that will push our emotional buttons in a variety of different ways – in other words, exactly what we've come to expect from the animation geniuses behind Toy Story, Coco and countless other classics.

Speaking of classics, the original Inside Out won an Oscar and has been hailed as one of the greatest family films of all time. Can the sequel possibly live up to it? There's only one way to find out: scroll to the bottom of this post, book your tickets and be first in line to watch the movie this June.

Before that, however, we want to bring you up to speed on the film's cast, story and release date, plus key information about the new emotions playing a critical role.

What is the story of Inside Out 2?

The official Pixar synopsis is as follows: "Inside Out 2 returns to the mind of newly minted teenager Riley just as headquarters is undergoing a sudden demolition to make room for something entirely unexpected: new Emotions! Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust, who've long been running a successful operation by all accounts, aren't sure how to feel when Anxiety shows up. And it looks like she's not alone."

Are Joy and Sadness returning for Inside Out 2?

Yes, Amy Poehler's Joy and Phyllis Smith's Sadness are back in Inside Out 2. They're joined by familiar emotions Anger (Lewis Black), Fear (now voiced by Tony Hale, who replaces Bill Hader) and Disgust (Liza Lapira, who replaces Mindy Kaling).

Who are the new emotions in Inside Out 2?

The most significant of the new emotions is Anxiety. A bundle of frazzled energy, Anxiety enthusiastically ensures Riley’s prepared for every possible negative outcome, and she comes to define Riley's transition into adulthood with all its triumphs and tribulations.

Envy is another new addition to Emotions HQ. She's perpetually jealous of everything everyone else has, and she’s not afraid to linger on it.

If any emotion defines the apathetic teenage experience, it's Ennui. Bored and lethargic with a well-practiced eye-roll, Ennui adds further grace notes of complexity to Riley's growing personality.

Talking of things that are synonymous with the teenage experience and growing pains, one can't forget Embarassment. This important new emotion likes to lay low, which isn’t easy for this burly guy with a bright blush-pink complexion.

Who is voicing the new emotions in Inside Out 2?

Anxiety is voiced by rising star Maya Hawke, daughter of Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman. She has appeared in the likes of Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019) and Wes Anderson's Asteroid City (2023).

Golden Globe-winning star of The Bear, Ayo Edebiri, voices Envy. It's her latest vocal role following her contribution to last year's triumphant Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse in which she voiced Glory Grant.

Ennui is voiced by Greek actress Adèle Exarchopoulos who was acclaimed for her role in the romantic drama Blue is the Warmest Colour (2013).

Embarassment is voiced by the versatile Paul Walter Hauser. He was acclaimed for his leading role in Clint Eastwood's Richard Jewell and recently won a Golden Globe starring opposite Taron Egerton in Black Bird. He's recently been tapped for a role in Marvel's Fantastic Four reboot.
