James Gunn shares Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 soundtrack ahead of the movie's release

It simply isn't Guardians of the Galaxy without a corking soundtrack of carefully curated hits. In keeping with his usual strategy, Guardians helmer James Gunn has unleashed the Awesome Mix for Marvel Studios' Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 ahead of the movie's release this May. And, as you'd expect, it's a winner.

It's a great way of alluding to the flavour of the third, and possibly final, Guardians movie without stooping to spoilers. As ever, there's the usual dad-rock emphasis (Earth, Wind and Fire's 'Reasons'; Rainbow's 'Since You Been Gone') mixed in with an intriguing tranche of more contemporary material (Florence and the Machine's 'Dog Days are Over').

The full soundtrack can be enjoyed in isolation on the following Spotify playlist. We can't wait to hear all of the tunes in context and something tells us that the return of Redbone's 'Come Get Your Love', which opened the first Guardians movie in 2014, will possess a distinctly emotional kick.

"I worked twice as hard on this soundtrack as I did on both the first two soundtracks combined," Gunn told Entertainment Weekly. "Once I started doing the first Guardians movie, I felt drawn to it. I felt called to it, if that makes any sense. So I feel very good [about Vol. 3] because I feel like I did everything that I possibly could to make this trilogy as good as it can possibly be. And I feel incredibly blessed and fortunate that I had all these people around me making it. It's the biggest blessing of my life."

The music in the Guardians series is as important a character as the heroes themselves. Chris Pratt's Peter Quill/Star-Lord leads the pack again and he's joined by Zoe Saldana's Gamora, Dave Bautista's Drax, Bradley Cooper's Rocket Racoon, Vin Diesel's Groot, Karen Gillan's Nebula, Pom Klementieff's Mantis and Sean Gunn's (brother of James) Kraglin. New faces include Will Poulter as Adam Warlock (he was teased at the end of Guardians Vol. 2) and Chukwudi Iwuji as the villainous High Evolutionary.

You can now book your Cineworld tickets for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in anticipation of its release on May 3rd.
