Oscar nominee Jessie Buckley confronts male horror in the trailer for Alex Garland's Men

The Oscar-nominated Jessie Buckley continues to forge a dynamic and fascinating career path. She next appears in Alex Garland's creepy-looking psychological horror Men, and the first trailer looks set to put the talented actor through her paces. Here's the poster.

The acclaimed author/screenwriter turned Ex Machina and Annihilation director makes his long-awaited return, this time absent the sci-fi trappings of his usual work. Buckley plays young woman Harper who is left distraught after the apparent suicide of her husband (Pappa Essiedu). Seeking solace in the British countryside, Harper rocks up at a beautiful country house, presided over by a creepy, buck-toothed Rory Kinnear in the first of several roles.

Yes, the equally versatile Kinnear inhabits the role of every man in Harper's orbit, adding to the eerie feeling of this all being a waking nightmare. From a local priest who accuses Harper of her husband's death to a cynical police officer and, most alarmingly, a child sporting a clown mask, Kinnear looks as chilling as Buckley looks empathetic.

With apparent shades of English ghost story master M.R. James, Garland promises to add to his roster of handsome-looking, psychologically probing thrillers. But whereas Ex Machina probed the limitations of the Turing Test and Annihilation explored the divide between human and alien biology, Men takes the notion of gender parity and social isolation to the extreme.

With the terrific Buckley in the lead, it's sure to be a tremulous and memorably unnerving experience. It comes from studio A24 who are masters of such things, having produced the spine-tingling likes of The Witch, Midsommar, Hereditary and The Lighthouse, so we have high hopes for this one.
