Ghostbusters is a franchise whose reputation proceeds itself. From Bill Murray's deliciously dry role as Pete Venkman to the iconic Ray Parker Jr. theme song, the legacy of the series is inescapable.

This March, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire promises to develop the legacy of this much-loved series. It's the fourth instalment in the official Ghostbusters canon and mixes up two generations of spook-fighting heroes in their attempt to conquer the 'death chill', a paranormal deep freeze that is endangering the whole of New York.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire comes on the heels of the original two movies, released in 1984 and 1989, and the more recent Ghostbusters: Afterlife, released in 2021. Need a reminder as to what happened in Afterlife? We've got it right here.

In Summerville, Oklahoma, Egon Spengler captures an entity in occultist Ivo Shandor's mine outside the town and lures another to his farm.
Upon attempting to capture the entity Spengler suffers a fatal heart attack
Sometime later, two children, Phoebe (Mckenna Grace) and Trevor (Finn Wolfhard) move into Spengler's old farmhouse with their mother Callie (Carrie Coon)
Phoebe discovers Egon's ghost trap, later identified by her new teacher Mr Grooberson (Paul Rudd)
Grooberson explains that the device belonged to one of the Ghostbusters, a gang of apparition-fighting science nerds who saved New York City twice over in 1984 and 1989

On opening the trap, Grooberson and Phoebe unleash a poltergeist that leads them back to Egon's secret bunker beneath the farmhouse
There Phoebe discovers that Egon Spengler is her grandfather and Callie's father, and that she belongs to a proud lineage of Ghostbusters
Phoebe and Trevor restore Egon's proton pack and the classic Ecto-1 car that they discover rotting in the barn
They utilise the equipment and use it to hunt down a rogue ghost named Muncher that causes chaos in the town
Using the Ghostbusters' telephone number that she had written down, Phoebe contacts former Ghostbuster Ray Stantz (Dan Aykroyd) for help and informs him of Egon's death
Stantz reveals that Egon left New York following the Ghostbusters' battle with Vigo the Carpathian (showing in 1989's Ghostbusters II)

Egon's ghost leads Callie to a wall of detailed notes and pictures he kept of his daughter's life, showing he cared about her more than she thought
The trail leads to a Gozerian temple in the desert that was designed by infamous occultist Ivo Shandor, who is revealed to still be alive
Shandor designed the apartment building of Dana Barrett (Sigourney Weaver) that was seen in the original Ghostbusters movie and had been planning to use the building to bring the powerful demon Gozer the Gozerian into the material world
It's revealed that Egon died while battling Shandor's attempts to resurrect Gozer in the town of Summerville
Gozer's minions Zuul and Vinz Clortho possess Callie and Grooberson and destroy Egon's equipment, allowing Gozer to escape
Shandor awakens and pledges his fealty to Gozer, but is killed nevertheless.

Ray and the other surviving original Ghostbusters, Pete Venkman (Bill Murray) and Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson), arrive in the town to help the nascent Ghostbusters defeat Gozer
Egon's ghost then manifests and helps the team vanquish Gozer back to a different realm
Egon reconciles with his family and friends before passing on to the afterlife
Back in New York, Peter is revealed to be married to Dana Barrett
Winston has become a wealthy entrepreneur and family man since leaving the Ghostbusters
Winston returns the fully restored Ecto-1 to the Ghostbusters' firehouse while in the basement, a light on the ecto-containment unit is seen flashing red

In Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, Manhattan is stricken by a supernatural deep freeze that portends the arrival of an ancient evil
Phoebe, Trevor, Callie and Grooberson return to New York to reconcile with the original Ghostbusters team and battle the paranormal activity
Occult expert Ray informs them they're facing the 'death chill', which torments its victims by quite literally scaring them to death
Ray, Venkman and Winston are joined by their former receptionist Janine Melnitz (Annie Potts) to help Phoebe and Trevor vanquish this new threat
