Cineworld ticket booking is now open for The Matrix: Resurrections. Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss return for the fourth instalment in the mind-melting Matrix franchise, which once again asks us to take the red pill and disappear down the rabbit hole.
Here are six reasons why you need to secure your seat for another awesome ride through the Matrix universe.
1. It reunites us with some iconic characters...
As mentioned, Keanu Reeves' Neo and Carrie-Anne Moss' Trinity are both back. The former is the computer hacker turned messianic human saviour, and the latter is the rebel freedom fighter who first alerted Neo to the eerie truth about the 'matrix', a computer simulation designed to pull the wool over our eyes. But how are they alive? At the end of 2003's The Matrix Revolutions, both characters sacrificed themselves in order to liberate the human race. This was the cost of destroying the reign of the machines and restoring liberty to Zion, the last remaining human refuge. Answers are surely coming, and the big screen is the ideal place to revel in Neo and Trinity's return.
2. ... And it re-calibrates some old favourites
Intriguingly, one of the most important Matrix characters has been de-aged. Laurence Fishburne's Morpheus, Neo's mentor, is now being played in younger form by actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. At the time of writing, we've no idea why this is happening, especially since a returning Niobe (Jada Pinkett Smith) is now a lot older, according to the most recent trailer. If you're looking for answers, their magnitude will surely be amplified by the theatrical experience, which promises an operatic, visually stunning Matrix experience. You can also enjoy another important moment in the charismatic Abdul-Mateen II's rise to superstardom, which comes off the back of memorable roles in Candyman and Aquaman.
3. The stunning action demands the big-screen experience
The Resurrections trailers wisely play it economically with the glimpses of the action sequences. Nevertheless, this is a Matrix movie, this time helmed by Lana Wachowski solo, so we know that there are going to be countless seat-gripping and visually arresting sequences. The black leather trenchcoats, the slo-mo leaping from buildings, the flashes of green code – all of this signals a franchise continuation that draws on the past while appearing to advance the story into an unknown future. Swap the sofa for the cinema seat and soak up another head-spinning journey into an alternate reality.
