The wilderness epic – Alpha

From Hell director Albert Hughes marshals a sweeping, prehistoric adventure about the formative relationship between man and wolf. Slow West's Kodi Smit-McPhee is the young warrior who forges a lupine connection amid a harsh landscape, and several set-pieces will take the breath away.

The buddy comedy – The Spy Who Dumped Me

Ted's Mila Kunis and Ghostbusters star Kate McKinnon are unlikely heroes in this knockabout spy caper. Kunis is the woman whose ex-boyfriend is unveiled as a CIA agent, with the scene-stealing McKinnon as her clueless BFF. Expect action and big laughs aplenty.

The latest Spike Lee joint – BlacKkKlansman

The famed director of Do the Right Thing and Malcolm X returns with his finest film in years. Prepare to laugh, wince and gasp in equal measure in this true story of black police detective Ron Stallworth (John David Washington), who brazenly infiltrated the Ku Klux Klan.

The chilling horror – Slender Man

Looking for spine-tingling thrills? Then this boogeyman chiller should be right up your street. Based on the mythology of the enduring internet meme that began in 2009, it focuses on a group of teens who fall foul of a hideous monster that springs from online lore.

The moving drama – The Children Act

Boasting a formidable line-up of talent, this powerful Ian McEwan adaptation is the story of a court case revolving around a young boy, who is refusing a blood transfusion on religious grounds. Emma Thompson, Stanley Tucci and Dunkirk's Fionn Whitehead unite with Iris director Richard Eyre.

The smutty laugh riot – The Happytime Murders (opens Monday)

It's no Sesame, all Street in this outrageously filthy comedy, from director Brian Henson (son of legendary Muppets creator, Jim). Don't expect anything family friendly in this story of a puppet detective who teams with a human partner (Spy's Melissa McCarthy).
