The Naked Gun

Ride along with the irresistibly poker-faced Lieutenant Frank Drebin in this classic eighties slapstick comedy. Star Leslie Nielsen cemented his graduation into a masterful comic buffoon in this feature-length adaptation of the short-lived Zucker, Abrahams and Zucker Police Squad! series. The latter capitalised on Nielsen's unexpected comic emergence in 1980's seminal spoof Airplane! (also a ZAZ production). Surely (sorry, Shirley) Nielsen's comic destiny was written in the stars?

Any number of scenes and lines from The Naked Gun have gone down in history ("Cuban?"/"No, Dutch-Irish. My father was from Wales"), and Nielsen turns the well-meaning yet inept Drebin's blitheness into a comic icon on par with the likes of Buster Keaton. Plus, Elvis Presley's widow Priscilla Presley reveals herself to have fine comic timing in her own right, playing the foil and eventual wife to Drebin, Jane.

Dumb and Dumber

It's easy to forget Jim Carrey's meteoric rise to comedy stardom in the early nineties. In 1994 Carrey saw three films released, including The Mask and Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. For April Fool's Day, we're presenting the most gleefully anarchic of Carrey's 1994 blockbuster hits: the much-loved Dumb and Dumber, which updates the slapstick Three Stooges formula with a contemporary hit of gross-out.

Carrey stars as Lloyd Christmas, one half of an intentionally obnoxious duo that also encompasses Harry Dunne (Jeff Daniels). They set out on a cross-country trip to Aspen, Colorado to return a suitcase full of money to its rightful owner. However, the plot is entirely incidental to the memorably broad sight gags (the icy tongue on the ski lift still sticks with us) in this early hit from Peter and Bobby Farrelly who would later helm the likes of There's Something About Mary.

That means the return of several beloved characters: Pete Venkman (Bill Murray), Ray Stantz (Dan Aykroyd), Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson) and Janine Melnitz (Annie Potts). It's time to fire up Ecto-1 and charge the proton packs for another blast of effects-led mayhem and wry comedy as those pesky ghosts prepare to meet their maker.
