Experience The Dark Knight in 4DX at Cineworld this Batman Day

Christopher Nolan's trailblazing Batman epic The Dark Knight is returning to Cineworld as part of Batman Day. This superhero epic re-imagines the mythology of the Caped Crusader along the lines of Michael Mann's crime saga Heat, and it unleashed Heath Ledger's Joker as a tour-de-force villain.

The movie is screening exclusively at Cineworld in multisensory 4DX. Here's what you need to know.

What do we need to know about The Dark Knight?

What more is there to know? Nolan's movie cemented his standing as one of the greatest interpreters of comic book material, eventually grossing more than $1 billion worldwide. It also secured a posthumous Oscar for Ledger, who passed away in January 2008 prior to the movie's release in July of that year.

The movie is regarded as a landmark of blockbuster cinema for how it amalgamates visually arresting, popcorn set-pieces with unashamedly dark and thorny explorations of morality and anarchy. It isn't for nothing that Justin Chang of Variety described the movie as, "An ambitious, full-bodied crime epic of gratifying scope and moral complexity," adding, "this is seriously brainy pop entertainment that satisfies every expectation raised by its hit predecessor and then some."

The spectacle is anchored by Christian Bale's increasingly conflicted Batman/Bruce Wayne and fans out to encompass an excellent supporting cast. Gary Oldman brings the human notes as Jim Gordon, later to become Commissioner, and Aaron Eckhart makes a strong impression as crusading DA Harvey Dent, later tragically turned into Two-Face as a result of the Joker's machinations.

Handsomely lensed by DP Wally Pfister (with whom Nolan developed pioneering IMAX cinematography) and featuring a propulsive score from Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard, The Dark Knight continues to envelop audiences in a riveting black cloud of mystery and mayhem.

What is 4DX?

Unique to Cineworld cinemas in the UK and Ireland, 4DX is a uniquely immersive multisensory format. It combines seat movement (generated by tactile motion programming) with a range of dynamic effects (wind, water, scents), putting audiences in the middle of the action.

The sheer expanse and bone-crunching impact of The Dark Knight will take on more pronounced characteristics when you see it in 4DX. From the opening bank robbery sequence to the Batpod car chase and the finale aboard the ships, Nolan's penchant for sweeping cinematography and bass-heavy sound design will be effectively complemented and enhanced by seat movement and palpable sensations.
