The new Fast & Furious movie Fast X is roaring into Cineworld cinemas on Friday May 19th, and it promises to be another thrilling ride. The first of a two-part finale for the popular franchise, this Louis Leterrier-directed blockbuster unites many of the popular characters from past Fast & Furious films (including Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez and Jason Statham) with one or two new faces (such as new baddie Dante, played by Jason Momoa).

As usual, though, the real stars of the show will be the awesome vehicles – and believe us when we tell you that there are some truly spectacular stunts in this latest instalment. To get you in the mood for these action-packed scenes, we decided to put together our pick of the best stunts seen in the Fast & Furious series so far. Seatbelts on!

Dom and Brian drive off a cliff (Fast Five)

Fast Five arguably contains the best stunts of the whole Fast & Furious series, and the scene where Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his gang pilfer some expensive cars from a moving train in the Brazilian desert is full of jaw-dropping moments. However, it's the bit at the end of the scene when Dom and Brian (Paul Walker) drive their 1966 Corvette off the edge of a cliff, before plunging silently into the river below, that's the most heart-stopping. Terrible waste of a beautiful car, mind you.

Dom exits a skyscraper (Furious 7)

When you have a gun-toting maniac baying for your blood, you don’t really want to be hanging around. But what if you’re  sat in a car at the top of a skyscraper? That small obstacle didn’t seem to bother Dom too much as he made his escape from a rampaging Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham). He simply crashed his Ferrari through the wall of the building, before nosediving at high speed towards the ground below. Brave or stupid? You decide.

Roman and Tej destroy a satellite (F9)

In one of the more far-fetched stunts in the Fast & Furious series, Roman (Tyrese Gibson) and Tej (Ludacris) are tasked with taking a ‘rocket car’ into space in order to destroy a satellite and prevent the uploading of a computer-hacking device called Project Aries. Hilariously, in the absence of any genuine astronaut equipment, the two men are forced to wear vintage diving suits as they blast into orbit. “This is crazy, bro!” exclaims Tej just before they crash headlong into their target. Yes, Tej, it really is.

Dom’s crew steal a 10-ton vault (Fast Five)

When Dom and his gang decide to rob drug lord Hernan Reyes in Fast Five, their getaway isn’t the most inconspicuous. With the vault they’ve stolen from Reyes attached by cables to the back of their cars, Dom and Brian tear through the streets of Rio de Janeiro as a swarm of police vehicles give chase. Needless to say, absolute carnage ensues, with cop cars, roadworks and even entire office buildings being obliterated in the pursuit.

Dom catches Letty (Fast & Furious 6)

Suspending disbelief is something you need to do a lot of when watching this film series, and there was undoubtedly a bit of head-shaking going on in cinemas during Fast & Furious 6’s multi-vehicle chase in Spain. The climax is particularly implausible, as Letty is thrown sky-high from a flipped tank, only for Dom to exit his moving vehicle and leap several metres through the air to save his wife. Implausible, yes, but enjoyable? Hell, yes!

Brian lands on a yacht (2 Fast 2 Furious)

The phrase ‘missing the boat’ certainly didn’t apply in this spectacular scene from 2 Fast 2 Furious. In a last-ditch attempt to thwart Argentinian drug lord Carter Verone as he escapes on his luxury yacht, Brian (Paul Walker) launches his car – along with passenger Roman (Tyrese Gibson) – into the air in the hope that he’ll land on the departing vessel’s deck. Needless to say, he completes his daring mission, much to the surprise of the people on board, and probably himself.

Dom leaps over a nuclear submarine (The Fate of the Furious)

In a stand-off between a nuclear submarine and a car, you’d expect the sub to come off best, right? Well, not in this eight instalment of the Fast & Furious series. When cyberterrorist Cipher (Charlize Theron) navigates her massive sub through an icy tundra, destroying everything in its wake, it looks like curtains for Dom and his buddies. And the gang leader’s fate appears to be sealed when a missile is trained on the car he’s driving. He’s having none of it, though, and – much to Cipher’s dismay – he suddenly soars over the top of the vessel, prompting the missile to crash smack-bang into the side of the submarine. Get roasted, sub!
