Fast X: Who's who in the new all-action Fast & Furious blockbuster

Fire up your engines and get into gear for the new action blockbuster Fast X – the penultimate movie in the much-loved Fast & Furious series. Showing at Cineworld cinemas from May 19th, this tenth film in the cars 'n' crime franchise was directed by Louis Leterrier (Now You See Me, Clash of the Titans, The Incredible Hulk) and reunites most of the cast members who've made Fast & Furious such a formidable addition to the action genre – including Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster and Jason Statham.

As well as the old faces, there are some brand-new characters in this latest edition, meaning there will be plenty to digest whether you're new to the series or a Fast & Furious veteran. So, to ensure that you hit the ground running when you take your seat for Fast X at Cineworld, here's a full lowdown of who's in it and how they fit into the overall picture...

Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel)

It simply wouldn't be a Fast & Furious film without Vin Diesel in the hot seat. His character, Dominic Toretto, is a hard-as-nails street racer who also heads up a gang of ruthless criminals. In this tenth instalment, we initially see Dom taking a step back from his nefarious activity to spend time with his wife Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) and stepson Brian (Leo Abelo Perry). However, he's thrust back into the thick of things when Dante Reyes (Jason Momoa), the son of late drug lord Hernan Reyes, seeks revenge for a heist Dom's gang carried out in Fast Five.

Letty Ortiz (Michelle Rodriguez)

Dom's childhood sweetheart, and now wife, Letty is not only an expert street racer but also a very skilled fighter and markswoman. Like her husband, her plans for a quieter life are scuppered when Dante Reyes embarks on his revenge mission, and Fast X features an incredible fight between Letty and Dante's evil associate, the cyberterrorist Cipher (Charlize Theron).

Dante Reyes (Jason Momoa)

New to the Fast & Furious series, Dante is the son of late drug lord Hernan Reyes, who was robbed by Dom's gang back in Fast Five. Played with unerring menace by Jason Momoa, he cuts an intimidating figure as he sets about avenging his father's loss. And he has no intention of letting the gang off lightly, telling Dom: "Never accept death when suffering is owed."

Mia Toretto (Jordana Brewster)

Dom's youngest sibling was initially disapproving of his criminal activity, but eventually joined in as a means to provide for her family. Mia wasn't originally in the Fast X script, but that soon changed after an interjection from an unlikely source. Vin Diesel revealed in an Instagram post: "You will never believe who corrected the very important role of Mia… my daughter, the Alpha Angel, who told the director very plainly and honestly “NO MIA NO FAST 10!” haha."

Jakob Toretto (John Cena)

Making only his second appearance in the Fast & Furious franchise (the first came in F9), Dom and Mia's brother was once ostracised from the family after it emerged that he'd tampered with his father's car, causing his death. But now the superspy is back on the team, and a clip from one of the trailers shows him driving Dom's stepson Brian around in a muscle car, with a couple of Dante's henchmen on their tail. Hilariously, Brian pulls a lever that results in the pursuing cars getting blown up – then apologises to his uncle for swearing.

Ramsey (Nathalie Emmanuel)

A computer whizz and member of Dom's gang, Ramsey returns for a fourth appearance in the Fast & Furious franchise – and she'll be more involved in the action than in previous films. "She’s definitely much more open to driving than she was before," actress Nathalie Emmanuel told Cinema Blend. "But in [Fast X], we see Ramsey taking the lead a bit more and continuing to affirm her place in the group and her necessity within the group, which is always really fun."

Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham)

A stalwart of the action movie genre, Jason Statham makes his sixth appearance in the Fast & Furious series as former MI6 agent Deckard Shaw. He and Dom were originally enemies, but the pair made friends after Shaw rescued Dom's stepson Brian from Cipher's plane in The Fate of the Furious. At the end of F9, a shocked Shaw opened his front door to find his old enemy Han Lue (Sung Kang) – a man he thought he'd killed – standing right in front of him. So, we can't wait to find out how that particular incident plays out in Fast X.

Tess (Brie Larson)

Throughout the Fast & Furious series, there's been a mysterious government agent called Mr Nobody pulling the strings and assigning missions to Dom's gang. He doesn't feature this time around, but his shoes are amply filled by one of his underlings, Little Nobody (Scott Eastwood). The film also introduces us to Mr Nobody's daughter, Tess, who, despite representing her father's agency, is very much her own woman.
