Akin to the splitting of the atom, the full trailer for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse implodes the notion of a definitive Spidey identity. This visually bombastic riot of colour promises to be an arresting and phantasmagoric expansion of Into the Spider-Verse's Oscar-winning success, dropping us back into the adventures of Miles Morales/Spider-Man (Shameik Moore).
The latter is now struggling to keep his crime-fighting abilities a secret from his parents, police officer Jefferson (Brian Tyree Henry) and nurse Rio (Luna Lauren Vélez). However, it only takes one excursion into the multiverse, undertaken with Miles' new best friend Gwen Stacey-Spider-Gwen (Hailee Steinfeld), and the former's mind is blown.
Yes, this is where all the so-called 'Spider-People' hang out, and you're sure to have a blast trying to spot all of them. The most important is Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac), a tortured iteration of the character who insists that Miles, like the other Spideys, follow his destiny and make the ultimate sacrifice. After all, this is baked into the DNA of the character.
When Miles rebels, all kind of multiversal hell breaks loose, uncorking some truly stunning animation. It's as if a series of static comic book panels have been imbued with all manner of organic life and tactile movement, so check out the trailer below.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, as per its predecessor, is overseen by the genius LEGO Movie creatives Phil Lord and Chris Miller. The directors this time are Joaquim dos Santos and Kemp Powers who are promising to send multiversal Spider-Man Miles Morales on another journey of dazzling discovery and excitement. (Don't forget that it will be followed by Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, due for release in 2024.)
