Jim Carrey is back as Doctor Robotnik...

The mid-credits tease in the first Sonic movie teased Carrey in the classic Dr Robotnik/Dr Eggman garb, replete with corset, goggles and oversized moustache. We spent most of the first movie wondering when he was going to transform, and it proved well worth the wait. Just how rubbery-faced and insane is Carrey going to be in the sequel? The mind boggles...

... As is Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic

Schwartz's enthusiastic vocal performance helped breathe life into the Sega icon in the first movie. Back in 2020, he described the Sonic 2 movie script as "great", so here's hoping the sequel can top the first movie's impressive box office total of $319 million. That makes it the highest-grossing video game movie to date, according to Forbes. Will Sonic 2 surpass it?

Carrey has dropped story hints

Rumour has it that the movie, which will once again be directed by Jeff Fowler, will involve the Chaos Emeralds from the original Sega video games, plus the appearance of 'Super Sonic'. Watch this space...

Idris Elba is voicing Knuckles

The versatile star of Luther and The Harder They Fall will be voicing the unmistakable red echidna, who first appeared in the game Sonic the Hedgehog 3. In the games, he was initially on Robotnik/Eggman's side before he switched loyalties to help Sonic. Will we see the same dynamic playing out in the movie? Well, it's rumoured that Knuckles will be helping Robotnik in search of an emerald that "has the power to both build and destroy civilisations".

Miles 'Tails' Prower will be making an appearance

The anthropomorphic flying fox, a favourite from the games, will be in the movie as voiced by Colleen O'Shaugnessy. She has voiced the character in the world of the games since 2014.
